COMMUNITY SING

TOWN HALL PACKED. A GREAT ENTERTAINMENT. On Wednesday night the Opunake Town Hall was taxed to its utmost to provide seating accommodation for the great crowd who attended the second community sing organised by the committee of the Red Cross relief. This function was an all-round improvement on the last, those present entering into the true spirit of the thing, from the outset, the choruses and part singing being splendid. The element of noise so characteristic of most such gatherings noticeable by its absence, and each and everyone did their utmost to make the various items the best possible and as a result the singing was first-class. Messrs T. P. Hughson and L. Heycock once again led the way and it speaks volumes for their ability when it is considered that there was an entire change from the last lengthy programme, the crowd being treated to new and original jokes, stories and monologues. Items by the “Black and White” orchestra, comprising Mrs. C. Malcolm, Miss R. Johnston and Mr. F. Barraclough, were enthusiastically appreciated. Mr. C. Humphries obliged with a comet solo while Mr. D. Thomas sang the verse of “Kentucky Home,” the public joining wholeheartedly in the chorus. The community songs began with the “National Anthem,” the items following being, “Irish Eyes are Smiling,” “Wee Doech-au-Doris,” “Loch Lomond,” “Painting the Clouds With Sunshine,” “One Man Went to Mow,” etc. As on the last occasion, the “rounds” sung dining the evening were especially good. The boys from the Kaweora camp, kindly brought down by Mr. W. Wan, Ihaia Road, were present and their whistling of various choruses was a feature of the .programme, several of the men apparently knowing a good deal about harmonising. These visitors were the guests of the committee at supper. Tea and biscuits again proved very popular with the patrons. Mr. T. P. Hughson auctioned flowers and a live goose sent in by well-wishers, and it estimated that there will be a profit of between £6 and £7, as a result of the evening’s fun. The next function on September sth should be equally as well attended as Mr. Simpson of New Plymouth will be leader. Mr. Simpson is claimed by New Plymouth residents as being one of the best in New Zealand to fill this office,, so don’t forget Monday, September sth, the community sing; bigger, better, brighter than ever.
