COMMUNITY SING

A WONDERFUL SUCCESS. ANOTHEE NEXT WEEK. The community singing organised by members of the committee of the Eed Cross Relief for the purpose of raising funds, and held in the Town Hall on Wednesday night was an outstanding success. The hall was taxed to its utmost capacity and under the excellent leadership of Messrs T. P. Hughson and L. Heycock, the crowd immediately entered into the true carnival spirit of the function and gave of their best.

Mr. Hughson's ability as a leader for such an entertainment is well-known in Opunake, and Mr. Heycock showed an amazing memory, while his deftness and sheer personality took the house by storm. Songs, both old-time favourites and modern hits, part songs, rounds, sketches, short stories and monologues were the order of the evening and all met with a remarkable reponse from the large, enthusiastic gathering. Mr. W. D. Richards, as pianist was at his best, and no doubt the organisers owe a lot to his clever playing. The presence of the Black and White Orchestra was also greatly appreciated. Continual applause greeted Mr. D. Thomas' two items, "Tipperary" and "Silver Threads Among the Gold," while the crowd joined whole heartedly with Miss Johnson in the chorus of "When It's Springtime in the Rockies."

Several rounds, including "We are Happy" and "Three Blind Mice," were a feature of the programme, the three sections of the audience taking their respective parts splendidly. Among other songs sung were "Show Me the Way to go Home," "Vive L'Amour," "John Brown's Body," "There is a Tavern," "Give Yourself a Pat on the Back," "The More We are Together," "Abe," etc., the singers continually surpassing each previous attempt.

At the conclusion of the evening's programme the crowd were keyed right up and looking for more, and, on being asked by Mr. Hughson to give a date for the next entertainment, they not only unanimously but also vociferously decided on next Wednesday night. Mr. Hughson publicly thanked the Town Board for the free use of the hall and all those, the public included, who had helped to make the evening such an outstanding social success. Seven dozen eggs and two days' work (the wages to go to the Relief Fund) were auctioned by Mr. Hughson. For the modest sum of threepence patrons were served with tea and biscuits, by members of the committee, and the money collected, together" with the £5 taken at the door, will add considerably to the funds of the Red Cross Relief.

So don't forget next "Wednesday night when one and all will once again be asked to roll up and join in the fun. Hot tea and biscuits will also be provided^
