The scowling person jumped in and took the only seat in the Auckland tram just as it was starting. Gazing about him with evident disgust at all the pipes in full hlast he sneeringly remarked: "Last year I visited the London Zoo, and saw a monkey smoking a pipe." Like a flash came the rejoinder from somebody, "Yes, its wonderful how intelligent some monkeys • are. Got more savvy than some humans I've met." Itoars of laughter followed. Why will these pranks treat smokers as though they were fools or worse? They condemn all tobacco as healthdestroying, whereas it may be nothing of the kind. Look, for example, at our popular New Zealand brands. Pure and good as tobacco can be, not healthdestroying because they soothe jaded nerves, and bring rest and peace to the tired brain. Quite harmless too, because they are toasted. The toasting eliminates the nicotine in them to, a considerable extent, besides enhancing flavour and fragrance.
