SCOTLAND YARD'S TASK
THE DEPORTED ALIENS. THOSE WHO SNEAK BACK. Scotland Yard, in collaboration with the immigration authorities, has been planning a big round-up of undesirable aliens who have managed to smuggle themselves back into Britain after having been deported. Many of these people are convicted crooks, thieves, swindlers, blackmailers, etc., while others are "Red" propagandists, who are on the secret service index. More than 400 of them are known to have made their way back into Britain during the last few months. In many cases they have been shadowed by officers of the Yard, and will be arrested as soon as the officers have learned all about their new crimes and accomplices. Although as close a watch as possible is kept on the ports, and photographs and descriptions of all deported persons are circulated to the immigration officials, the authorities have had to confess that they are unable to prevent these undesirables re-enter-ing the country. It is easy for a man to alter his appearance, either by growing a moustache or beard or shaving one off, and in Berlin and Antwerp there are forgery factories that specialise in providing bogus passports on payment of a moderate fee.
A man poses as a tourist on entering Britain, and as under the new regulations he need not register uder the Aliens' Act until he has been in the country for three months, he has plenty of time in which to bury himself in the underworld of the large cities of the seaport towns before the authorities even get an inkling that he is back in England again. Other aliens come in as stowaways. In a number of cases deported aliens have even managed to persuade the British Home Office that they are needed back in England for business or compassionate reasons, and have thus managed to get their deportation orders revoked.
