OPUNAKE CRICKET CLUB

THE ANNUAL MEETING. OF OFFICERS. *P Dr. E. Af. Griffin presided over a goCcf attendance of members at the annual meeting of the OpuI nake Cricket Club, held last night. jjk Presidtnt's Report. The president, Dr. E. M. Griffin reviewed the past season as follows: — Faced with many difficulties, a cricket club was formed in 1931 in Opunake, and two teams were entered in the competitions. The Saturday team won only one of its matches but demonstrated its possibilities and capabilities by losing narrowly to Stratford, the winners of the southern division. The Wednesday, team weaker but with weaker opponents compared with the week-end teams, did much better and won four if its matches. Practice games were held with Hawera, Kaponga and Okaiawa before the grade games and we are indebted to those clubs for the cricket spirit shown in their travelling' those distances to help our club along. One of the difficulties met with was the expense of travelling but it is confidently expected that it shall be completely overcome this season. Two social functions were held and were very successful. The ball drew probably the largest crowd seen in the Opunake Town Hall for many years. The success of that function was a credit to the ladies' committee to .which a complimentary social was tendered, meeting with the success it deserved. Congratulations are tendered to G. Dundy in winning the O'Brien bat, to H. Wilson in winning the Griffin Cup, to W. H. Burgess in scoring the club's only century (106 retired). The financial position of the club is sound, in.that starting with no assets, it now has cricketing material and a cash balance of approximately £2O in the bank. I personally desire to thank the members of the committee for the work done and their loyalty to the principles of the game. Election of Officers. The following officers were elected for the ensuing season: . Patron, Mr. A. E. O'Brien; president, Dr. E. M. Griffin; vicepresidents, Messrs J. Wilson, W. Burgess, B. Bowman, C. Clare, and Rev. Roberts; secretary and treasurer, G. Cundy; committee, formed of the president, vicepresidents and Messrs B. Dudley, »C. Bowater, H. Brooker and S. Clare. Messrs Bowman, Griffin, and Burgess were elected as a grounds committee. Delegates to South I Taranaki Association, Messrs W. Burgess and C. Clare. After a discussion on subscriptions and travelling expenses it was decided to leave the fixing of a subscription until a later date. As a number of new members have joined the club, there will be both a Saturday and Wednesday team entered for the competitions. The choosing of a suitable date for the annual ball was left to the discretion of the committee. A small account was passed for payment, a vote of thanks being accorded to Mr. H. Brooker, sec- ' retary to the club for the past ' season. Mr G. Cundy was elected coach and club captain, the selectors being Messrs Burgess and Cundy for Saturday team and Messrs H. Wilson and C. Clare for the Wednesday team. New members enrolled for the season were Messrs C. Markham, R. Lusk, L. M. Stephenson, Veador, McCullum, M. Wilson, H. Grey and Downey. A very keen meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the Press.
