MANGAHUME

(From Our Own Correspondent.) lam the maid of the lustrous eyes Of great fruition, Whom the sons of men that are over-wise Have called ambition ! Some people have the microbe of ambition firmly embedded in their thinking apparatus, but it does not follow that they have the resource to carry out their intentions but when they are helped' by other people’s generosity, they cannot fail to succeed.

The pupils of the local school have long yearned to achieve some worthy object, therefore their joy was gieat when IV*r R. J. Morris visited the school on Friday and made thq announcement that he was prepared tp allow Jock Kirk to rear one of his calves on behalf of the scholars for entry in the Opunake Show's Calf Rearing Competition. Needless to say, the offer was. thankfully accepted and the school is now among the ranks of the aspirants for first class honors at the forthcoming show.

Recently, Mr Coombridge, a vigorous stripling of So years, made and presented a valuable book case to the school for the housing of the library. Such thoughtful acts brighten our existence and the whole school acclaims itself as duly grateful. However, the book case is of such dimensions that the books now available take up ve:y little of its space, therefore any noble minded souls having superfluous literature are invited to rush it up to the front lines

On Friday, MrSyme, Agricultural Instructor, vi-ited the school and exp:essed himself as well satisfied with the improvements ■ effected daring tl e last five months. On Sunday a party of anglers from Ellham captured several trout near the bridge,- The local anglers prefer the waters near the Waiteika Road, therefore they, missed the haul lover down, but they are not down hearted, as all anglers do not exclu sively fish for trout. Many gardeners complain that small birds are very voracious this year, with the result that seeds have to be well guarded to ensure a crop. A general attack has been made upon noxious weeds as the result of a “ shake-up ” by the inspector. Weeds of all kinds appear to be doing well this year but our settlers are determined to eradicate them, for they say that then inspectors will, like the Arabs “ Fold their tents and silently steal away."
