An appeal for deserted wives who are left without any support was made at the Women's Conference in Auckland. A delegate instanced two men who got away with a yacht, but were immediately brought back, while men who deserted their wives went scot free. Adjutant Gordon said it was too sad to see deserted wives out scrubbing j and cleaning, while their runaway husbands evaded their responsibilities and went entirely unpunished. Adjutant Gordon said there should be a farm colony for such men, where they should be made to earn the cost of the upkeep of their families, instead of permitting them to become a burden on the rates.

Speaking in an amusing vein at the Rotary Club luncheon at Wellington Dr W P Buck made reference to the study of the human race by means of skuils. He explained that he. himself wis a mixture of an Irish race and a Polynesian race. That was obvious (Laughter.)
