The wind up euchre party and social in connection with the series of Church of England piano fund function* was held in the Town Hall on Tuesday evening and as usual th 3 evening was pleisantly denotedao cards and dance. The attendance was good. The music for the dance was supplied by Miss D Sinclair, extras being played by Misses E Sims, L Preston and Mr R Giddens. Supper was provided in the usual I bountiful scale. The winners for the ! series of games were : Mrs Whittjington (ladies) and Mr Kennard (gents).

An appeal for deserted wives who are left without any support was made at the Women's Conference in Auckland. A delegate instanced two men who got away with a yacht, but were immediately brought back, while men who deserted their wives went scot free. Adjutant Gordon said it was too sad to see deserted wives out scrubbing j and cleaning, while their runaway husbands evaded their responsibilities and went entirely unpunished. Adjutant Gordon said there should be a farm colony for such men, where they should be made to earn the cost of the upkeep of their families, instead of permitting them to become a burden on the rates.

Speaking in an amusing vein at the Rotary Club luncheon at Wellington Dr W P Buck made reference to the study of the human race by means of skuils. He explained that he. himself wis a mixture of an Irish race and a Polynesian race. That was obvious (Laughter.) Those present that day were probably just as much mixed as he was, although they might not know about it.(Laughter. • Of course, he did not mean mixed alcohoiically. (Laughter.) Rowland Dickson had pointed out that if they took the skulls that had been studied in New Zealand they would find that the long-headed type predominated in the North, whereas there were more broad»headed people in the South. Because of that, said Dickson, it was shown that the South Island people had been driven out by the North Island people, and in some cases had been driven as far as the Chatham Islands. The first people who inhabited New Zealand were the alpine type. The history of the Maori people was the history of New Zealand, and it should be encouraged. The Maori people, Dr Buck thinks, must eventually disappear through intermingling and intermarrying-
