The newly reconditioned Red Star liner Belgenland contains all ihe latent advances in furnishing and luxurious equipment. She is 27,200 tons, 697 ft long, and 78ft wide. With the Lapland she will take up the Red Star service between Antwerp and New York. She has accommodation for 2700 passengers in three classes, and the provision for each class marks an advance. Her third class is a revelation in comfort. She has some unusual features including an observation promenade forward of the main deckhouse, across the deck, as on a yacht, and a glass enclosure on the main promenade deck. There are a swimmhg pool aud a Turkish bath, a palm court, a ladies' drawing-room, children's playroom, and electric elevators. In the Belgenland the table d'hote has been abolished, and passengers may order their meals a la carte with no extra charge. The decorations of the vessel are admirable, especially the drawing-room in the Adams style, and the smokingroom suggests the William in gallery at Hampton Court. Her propelling machinery is a combination of reciprocating engines with a turbine, and she uses oil fuel. She is exceedingly steady at sea. The Belfast ship painters went on strike before their work on her was finished with the result that the Belgian workmen will reap the benefit and the British loss money.
