RE-WEST COAST SETTLEMENT RESERVES - 1881 ACT.
(to the editor.)
Sib.— ln your account of the meeting lately held at Opunake, 1 am reported to have stated that the Natives would be able to sell at the end of the * new period of ten years. The facts are, that the Natives <ean sell these lands to the Government at any time during the ten years and there is no necessity to wait until the period expires. There are some formalities to be observed, which do not present any difficulty ; and it cannot be too generally understood that the sale by v the Natives can be mads only to the Government. In the event of the Government purchasing the land it will then be offered to the tenant either as freehold or as a Grown Leas?. I trust the foregoing will make the matter clear.—l am. etc., 0. A. Wilkinson.
