NOMINATIONS CLOSE FOR Rahotu Athletic Oiub on February 9th. (chopping), February 20th (running) Piuama Sports Club March Ist (chopping) March 4th (running). Warea Athletic Society (chopping) 4th March (running) 11th. Opanake Caledonian Society (Easter gathering The Waverley sports are to be beld on March 18. At the Elthana Caledonian sports on Thursday some very good performances were recorded on the track, especially in the mile flat. Angus Campbell, who has ran some clinking distance races on this coast, conceded 120 yards limit at Eltham, giving J. Feaver 20, Ward Go, Prentice 50 and Byan 90yards. It can thus be seen that his pacemakers were of the order that goeth. He cut all opposition down in the real good time from scratch of 4.34; Ryan and Luke Ward were his immediate followers. Prentice a runner that bandicappers cannot afford to treat too liberal, as he is a good man off a medium mark in the very best company. He wou the half-mile easily off 55 yards ; a rather good start, I think for him. Feaver started off 20 yards but rati unplaced. J. Deegaa won the high jump at Eltham with sft 3|iu. The performance was .creditable seeing he was the scratch leaper. At the same gathering Lewis (who competed here two seasons ago) won the 100 yards and 220, second to Bailey in the 440 ; he is credited with 9.4-oih from 7|yds. Taking a note by the times recorded at Eltham. the track is a fairly fast one. The amount taken at the gates was £24, not as much as it should have been seeing the good programme provided. The Oaonui Sports Club hold their annual gathering to-morrow week. The weather conditions are the factors for weal or for ill-luck, and if this anxious expectancy can be appeased by nice sunshine on that morn (the 20th) a successful outing will be assured. The place of gathering is handy, the folk bonnie and the sportites enthusiasticThe Warea Athletic Club are not going in for giving big prize-money; this should be all the better for the district runners as they will not have any " snags " to bump against. Kerr, a Tariki athlete, who walked rings round everything in the professional ranks three years ago is now out in the amateurs. At the Port Nicholson combined athletio meeting he walked the mile in G. 27 1-5, beating Creamer's record by 1-sspc In the 2-mile lie paced it out in 18.55 4-sfch, knocking 16 l-sth off the N.Z. record. There is now no encouragement for a walkist in the pro. ranks and this is probably the reason why he has joined the amateurs. The Euglish cricketers put up a good score of 496 in their first innings against CKago ; the latter knocked up 257 in their first innings, which, under ordinary circumstances and against a provincial team, would be rated as a first-class performance, but judging by the follow-on (they have lost three_ wickets for 07 runs) it will take Otago all their time to save a oue innings defeat. At the international swimming sports at the Exhibition, the Australians won all the principal events.
