OAONUI.

(own correspondent.)

The usual fortnightly dance under the auspices of the Hall Committee was held here on Friday, 16th, but owing to the inclemency of the weather there was only a small attendance. However, those who were venturesome enough to brave the elements had a thoroughly enjoyable time, dancing being kept up until about 2 a.m., on Saturday morning.

The seats for the Oaonui hall are to hand in separate parts which only want putting together before being ready to receive their weary loungers. This speaks well for the marvellous power of growth in Taranaki soil, for it was only in my last letter I mentioned that the trees out of which their timbers were to be made had been planted. Our next endeavour should be to clear the debt off the hall, which, owing to the enterprise of the community, now amounts only to about £2O. Stand to your guns, boys I and reduce this to a credit balance;

The all absorbing topic of conversation at present is the approaching marriage of a popular Oaonui couple, but more of this anon. I understand there is a great dpmand for kerosene tins which in some strange manner are usually associated with weddings. The local factory held a very satisfactory position in the recent grading competition at the Palmerston Winter Show. This is the first exhibit from Oaonui, and the principles concerned, Messrs Langton and McQueen, deserve the congratulations that have been freely bestowed on them. Great excitement prevailed here on Friday morning when it was reported that a well-known resident had been lost in the bush while on a shooting excursion. According to rumour a party of anxious relatives and friends were searching for him the whole of Thursday night, but without success. The incident approached the ridiculous when on Friday morning the strayed one turned up at the factory stating that he had been spending the night in the land of nod at a neighbouring camp.
