Death of an old Settler.

* We have to record the death of anther old settler, which took place on Saturday afteruooh, when Mr Joseph Wagstaff passed over to the great majority. The deceased gen|Jeman had been ailing for the past nine months, and latterly had been suffering from dropsy, as well as breaking up from old age. He had not be«n confined to his bed, but was only able to walk around the house for 4 a few minutes at a time. For several days previous to his death he was in bed, and suffered considerable pain. Towards the end he appeared easier and passed away very peacefully. The deceased was born in Coventry in 1829. He arrived in Nelson with his father in the ship Bolton in 1842, and for many years was engaged in flaxmilling. He came to Opunake about 22 years ago, and for some time was engaged in flaxmilling. He was farming on the Ngarilii-road for a few years, and about five and a-half years ago removed to Opunake', where he has since lived. He leaves three daughters—Mrs Fowler, Mrs Cassidy, and Mrs White, and has also a brother, who has lived with.him for the past year or two. The funeral took place 'yesterday afternoon, when the old residents showed their last respect to the deceased by following his remains to their last resting place. The Burial Service of the Church of England was impressively read by she ; .Rev. H, T. Rawnsley.
