SUPPLY TO JAPAN

DECISION FOR DUTCH

(News by Cable.) LONDON, Oct. 23.

Replying to a question, the Und-er-oec'retary for Foreign Affairs, Mr. R. Butler, in the House of Commons, said that any decision of a general character concerning the supply of oil to Japan from the Dutch Fast indies rested with the Dutch Fast indies Government. Ho understood that no agreement had yet been reached. N umerous complimentary questions followed, including the following : “Will Britain use all her influence to prevent the completion of the deal !” “Does the Government wish the world to understand the last word comes from the Dutch'! What about the United States embargo !”

Mr. Butler 'replied that there was complete co-operation between Britain, tho United States and the Netherlands on this matter. Asked about negotiations for the supply of oil to Japan by a number of Dutch and other companies, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Economic Warfare, Mr. Dingle Foot, said the Minister, Dr. *H. Dalton, was aware that suennegotiations were taking place and was watching them closely. The newspaper Asahi Shmibun say’s: “To bring the Dutch East Indies on our side we must eithei show them it is against Dutch interests to rely on England and the United States or to resort to armed force to 'make? them comply.”
