WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

WOODLANDS MEETING , The Woodlands Women’s Institute met recently, Mrs. Noble presiding. The meeting opened witli the National Anthem and the New Zealand National Anthem, followed by tno institute Song. Mrs. Briggs reported on the bi-an-nual council meeting held at Matata, which she had attended as delegate. Those who had arranged the bowl of flowers which gained first place at the meeting, were congratulated and thanked for their effort. Mrs. Sargent was also congratulated on her soldier’s fruit cake which had been awarded second place. The roll call was “Animal Noises”, followed by the Golden Thread, given by Mrs. Hollard; ‘ ‘Boost” ana “The Secretary’s Duties”, being both timely and amusing subjects. The competitions were well and closely contested as the results showed.

Best Flower from My Garden: Mesdames McGregor, McCaldon, and Pilkington tied for first place.

Shortbread: Mesdames Barbour, Mujhern arid Pilkington tied for. first place. Mrs. Price and Mrs. Maxwell were hostesses for the day.. GARDENING CIRCLE The October meeting of the Wai-mana-Nukuhou Women’s -Institute gardening circle was held last Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. J. Mitchell, Waiinana. The garden, flowering shrubs, and a beautiful bed of “Lily of the Valley” were much admired.

Mrs. Mitchell demonstrated a quick method of raising seedlings in boxes. Several interesting readings were given by Mrs. K. Bell and Mrs. C. Wylde. The competitions were judged by Mrs. J. Wardlaw and resulted as follows: Best flower: Mrs. Mitchell 1, Mrs. Stevenson 2, Mrs. 11. Wardlaw 3. Best vegetable : Mrs. King 1 (green pea), Mrs. Hughes 2, Miss Hughes 3.

Vase of Iceland poppies: Mrs Hughes 1, Mrs. Stansbury 2, Mrs Mitchell 3.

Bowl of shrubs: Mrs. Mitchell-1,. Mrs. Stevenson 2, Mrs. C. Wylde 3. A competition arranged by Mrs. J. Mitchell was won by Mrs. Stansbury. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames A. K. Bell and M. King, and a hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mrs. Mitchell for the pleasant afternoon.
