Mr. G. E. Butt, who for the past ten years, has been a popular member of the Whakatane Post Office staff, has received int.mation of his transfer to the postmastership at Tolaga Bay. ******* Mr. Rob. Russell, of Ruatoria, and formerly of Opotiki, passed through Opotiki to-day on a return trip from Auckland. Mr. Russell has been accepted for service in the Fleet Air Arm in England. CONVERSAZIONE As a climax to the music examinations held on Wednesday JCth. October, 1040, by (he Royal Schools of Music and conducted by Mr. Max Pirani; a conversazione was held at the residence of Mr. 11. S. HoVncs, local secretary to the Board. Local teachers profited very greatly by Mr. Pirani’s remarks and his playing of several of the works of eminent composers.

Before presenting the Mozart Fantasia in 0 Minor, Mr. Pirani explained the dramatic character of its construction. His. power of interpretation and brilliant technique were most evident in the first movement of the Italian concerto by J. S. Bach. In marked contrast a Barcarolle by Chopin created an atmosphere of flowing concord. Tim final choice of a bracket of hairy Tales by a modern Russian composer, Nicolai Medtner was charming and original. It is felt that Mr. Pirani has contributed very greatly to the development of the Study of Music in Opotiki and grateful thanks arc due t.o Mr. and Mrs. Holmes for making the necessary arrangements for the occasion.
