REPEATEDLY HIT

R.A.F. OBJECTIVES BOMBING. JN GERMANY MILITARY TARGETS PERSISTENT RAIDING ' TRAIL OF DESTRUCTION • (News by Cable.) RUGBY, Oct. 14. The raids on Berlin represented, only a small part of the Bomber Command’s operations on Saturday night. A total of 40 separate objectives were attacked, according to a later Air Ministry bulletin, incliuP ing heavy attacks on Krupps works at Essen, three aluminium factories in Germany, and Channel ports from Ostend to Le Havre.

Railway centres, aerodromes and industrial works were also bombed. The attack on tho Krupps armament factory began at about 8.30 p.m. and lasted nearly two hours. The works, buildings, which cover many acres, were repeatedly hit by highexplosive bombs, including several of the heaviest calibre yet carried into Germany by the Royal Air Force. Parachute flares were used to light up the vast target. “The factory seemed to be working at full pressure when we arrived,” said the navigator of one aircraft, “and by the light of our flares we got an impression of miles of sheds of all sizes and a huge factory, chimney belching columns of smoke, we did a couple of runs over the works,to pick up our particular target—the machine shop—then, came in again and let go our bcmliii. As near as we could tell we were either right on top of or quite' close to the shop.” Factories and Railways

Separate forces assailed the Wintershall aluminium alloy factory at Herringen, two miles westward of Hamm and two important smelting plants at Bitterfeld. The bombers ’twice attacked the railway yards at Cologne, Hamm and other communication targets, including a highway bridge at Bremen. Heavy bombers attacked oil storage plants and refineries at Hanover and Cologne and set fire to a building. The Fokkcr factory buildings at Amsterdam were straddled and a power station at Waldeck was heavily bombed. Blast furnaces at Torgau were also struck.

Medium bombers attacked docks and shipping at Calais, Boulogne, Dunkirk, Le Havre and Ostend. numerous hits on quaysides and harbour installations were registered. Other bombers bombarded the long-range gun emplacements at Cap Gris Nez.

Many Berliners are feeling highly disgruntled at the cynical manner in which they have been misled by the Nazi leaders, and according to neutral reports they are not any better disposed as a result of-notic-ing how high party officials have found the moment a convenient one to depart from what are described as tho “autumnal holidays” in Upper Bavaria. ■ The German news agency says: “Four British bombs struck the institute of hygiene at the university hospital of Mucnster. Two other bombs fell on a building occupied by the university staff,”
