Interesting Demonstration. The apparently impossible was demonstrated at the conclusion of the Opotiki Firp Board mooting on Wednesday night, when the brigade superintendent, Mr. J. Shaw, showed members, by means of a Japanese tool, how hoses can be repaired while in use. Most people- would think it utterly impossible to rivet a patch on a hose- under high water pressure, on the inside. The special tool used makes th.s task an easy one, ami holes can be quickly repaired with the rivets. Part of tho rivet is pushed through a hole in tho hose and then by means of a thin pin which is drawn outwards the rivet is spread inside the hose and then drawn tightly against the hose wh.ch is compressed against the padded rivet head, thus making a perfect seal. The principle of the rivet’ is simple yet ingenious. Opotiki-Whakalane Highway. ■ Recently an Automobile Association’s representative visited the Bay of Plenty and regarded the road surface as below the standard usually associated with a first-class highway, states the current issue of tho Automobile Association’s Official Bulletin. In conversation with a News representative a short time ago, a local driver, who uses this road daily, stated there had been a wonderful mprovement in the surface of the road and said that the engineer rcsponsble was to be congratulated on the improvement in travelling conditions. He stated that the surface was the best it had been for a very long time and he was quite satisfied with the road conditions and expressed the hope that the improved standard would be maintained. 1
