PASSED TEST

NEW NAVAL GUN SHOTS COST £SOO LONDON, Sept. B.—Firing a few test shots with a new British £30,000 naval gun cost £SOO. The Min. gun weighs TOO tons and has a barrel 60ft. long. Its big test was when a charge, consist.ng of a huge quantity of cordite, exceeding the normal charge, was packed in the breech. Experts, workmen and spectators took cover in specially reinforced shelters. Ten seconds after a warning hooter had been sounded, the gun was fired. The huge, dull explosion shook even the reinforced shelter. In its 500 ft. flight the projectile smashed through two wire screens electrically connected to a mechanism which recorded the velocity and pressure. After 30 minutes, a normal charge, consisting of a 400 lb. load of cordite, was inserted. This charge was repeated three times, after which the experts declared themselves well satisfied with the gun, which had passed the tests triumphantly.
