FIRST AID RECRUITS WANTED

. EMERGENCY PRECAUTIONS CLASS INTERESTING LECTURES The response by men (including youths) in the Opotiki district for first-aid instruction in connection with the Emergency Precautions Scheme has been very disappointing, surprising apathy being shown towards such a vital link in the scheme. A few enthusiasts turned up at the first lecture on Thursday night last. Enthusiasm, however, made -up for lack of numbers and a most enjoyable and instructive time by spent. Lectures are to be given by Drs. H. J. Mail and C. S. James, the latter giving the first lecture. Quite apart front the main object of the training given, the knowledge acquired, should be invaluable in ev-ery-day life. At the present time there is a decided dearth of men capable of giving proper attention to anyone injured, and particularly where fractures of bones are concerned. This was clearly shown at a football match at the beginning of the season when a well-known player broke his leg and lay on the sideline for more than half-an-hour before it was possible to secure the services of a doctor.

An urgent appeal is made to other •men to come forward and acquire a good grounding in first-aid work. It would be only foolishness to wait until an emergency arose and then find a lack of trained men in the district to carry on the work. The next lecture will take place in the Masonic Hall to-morrow (Tuesday) night, commencing at 8 o’clock.
