AMATEUR ATHLETICS

BIG OPOTIKI MEETING very successful day HIGH JUMPING EXHIBITION Beautiful weather favoured the annual championship meeting held by the Opotiki Amateur Athletic and Cycle -Club on the reserve cn Saturday. In yiew of the fact that the day was not a holiday, the attendance of the public was good and the general opinion was that the day’s sport provided had been a most excellent one. Probably the highlight of the meeting was the fine jumping exhibition given by the Gisborne senior high jumper, Grey, who cleared the limit on the bar of oft. 11 in. and then had the bar placed right on the top of the uprights. Three attempts were made to clear the bar, the last one “going very close, the bar being lightly tipped. The height was equal to the New Zealand record. An exhibition of hammer-throwing was given by Leckie of AVhangarei, this being the first time this has been seen in Opotiki, and the exhibition aroused considerable interest. Lecltie’s best throw was 140 ft. 3in.

Despite the absence' of the Te Puke and Tauranga teams, the competition in nearly all events, with the exception, of the distance events, was very good. The times in the distance runs were very slow as a result of any real opposition. in both senior arid junior classes. There was much better competition in the ladies’ events t-liis season, and the local girls gave a very good performance.

Prior to the commencement of the sports, the teams paraded up and down in front of the grandstand. After forming iii front of the stand the teams were welcomed by Mr. S. M. Jephson, who apologised for the unavoidable absence of the Opotiki Club’s president, Mr. C. Tabb. Mr. Jephson thanked the visiting teams for their continued support of the meeting and expressed the hope that the meeting would be a very enjoyable one. The Mayor (Mr. G. S. Moody) donor of the Moody Banner, for which the various clubs were competing, also spoke briefly and welcomed the teams to Opotiki and thanked the crowd for attending.

The Aljoody Banner which has been -held by Gisborne for some years, was again won by that club, the points at the end of the day being: Gisborne Club 76 points, Opotiki Club 53 points, Rotorua. Club 2l£ points and AVhangarei Club 3£ points. The 202 yard distance was incorrectly laid out, the outside competitors having a big advantage over the inside runners. As a result of this error it was- decided not to include the points in the senior and junior 220 events in the aggregate.

The programme was a. very long one and the events were run off in good time in view of the time occupied in getting the field events through. These always take up a lot of time< and usually competitors in these events are also competing in other events, which are in consequence delayed somewhat. The officials had a very busy time and are to. be congratulated on the manner in which the meeting: was conducted. The track's were all in good order and towards the end of the meeting, the wind died down, after blowing fairly strongly earlier in the meeting.
