WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

WAIMANA BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS (From Our Own Correspondent). The Waimana-Nukuhou branch of the Women's Institute celebrated its - ninth birthday in the Waimana Hall last Thursday evening. The function took the form of a social and dance which was open to all members’ husbands and friends. The hall was filled to capacity. After the singing 0 1 : the ' Institute song, dancing commenced, Alt A. AVardlaw, Mil's King and Aliss J. AlcConnell supplying the dance musicMr C. N. Alengcs most capably acted as Ai.C.

The Alonte Carlo watz was won by Airs Henderson and Air Roy. AA’ickens, and a box of chocolates for competition wa» won by Aliss ML Stansbury. The items given between dances were as follows: —Aoeal items were rendered by Airs F. Davies (Nukuhou North), Auss H. Hoole and Air Tapp (Alatata); all being applauded and encores demanded. yV very clever tap dance was given by Aliss K. AA’alton, the dancer being recalled several times. My G. Boyle gave two much appreciated humorous recitations. A play entitled “A Girl for the Hall”, was very well presented by members of the Drama Circle of the Institute, •and at the conclusion of the programme, members of the Glee Club of the Institute, contributed songs and choruses, Airs King playing the accompaniments.

After a dainty supper had been served by the ladies, Air A\ oolfield spoke on behalf of the guests, thanking the Institute members for such an enjoyable night’s entertainment. The National Anthem then closed a most pleasant evening. Among those present were: —

OTARA MONTHLY MEETING The regular monthly meeting of the Otara Women's institute was held on Tuesday in the Otara Hall when Mrs. McCallion presided and welcomed -Mrs Macrae, of Wairata, Mrs Wilson, of Waiotahi, and several members of the Woodlands Institute. The Institute song and creed and a brief business session were followed by an interesting and comprehensive report by Mrs K. Brown, of the recent Dominion Conference in Wellington. Mrs Martin spoko of the Borough Council’s invitation to ropresentatvies of local women’s .organisations to meet them in discussion as.to the best manner of providing the much-needed rest and Plunketi rooms. Mrs Wilson spoke of the ready co-operation of the women’s organisations in furnishing the rooms. Mrs Wilson also spoke briefly of her recent Australian trip and of women’s institutes in that country. A further talk on the subject is kindly promised.

In the absence of Mrs Noble, the chair was then takjen by Mrs McGregor, who announced interesting items. A roll call “My Farthest Trip and most Memorable Event”, was fully answered and quite entertaining. A musical competition, arranged by Miss Upton, wa£ won by Miss Helen 1 Morice. Mrs McGregor demonstrated rug making and a partly worked rug was greatly admired. Afternoon tea was then served, and had been kindly ' w supplied by Mesdames Jones, Manb.v and Stewart. Mrs Macrae gave, what proved to be, a talk of intense interest. that of a journey to all the Australian ports of £jill and .as far as Aden on the way home at Coronation time. speaker tell of her further travels. A set competition of marmalade was won by Airs AlcOullion. o.ucl ioi table decorations. Airs Brown was first. Airs AleCallion thanked all present for attending in such inclement weather and specially thanked those responsible for making the meeting such an interesting and happy one. Appreciative mention was also made of Afrs Lowe and her helpers in conducting the recent successful stall for institute funds. The'meeting closed with the National Anthem played by Airs Hoi lard.
