CHRISTCHURCH ACID DROPS
BY ROBIN GOODFELLOVT,
The Sydonhain Borough Council is determined to make the old Show Ground into a really enjoyable place for recreation. A' really good cycling track is to be formed to which the local Bicycle Clubs have guaranteed £100 per annum. The enterprise of the Council has raised the ire 'oi the writer of " Search Lights." He turns his farthing dip m that direction and with his usual refined taste indulges m one of those malicious sneers at the working population for which his writings are so noted.. He has the presumption to call the bicyclists cads on castors. He seems quite to forget that all whitemen are not cads and that even if some may be disignated by that name every other sport has some black sheep. Even journalism is hot exempt from the literary cad who from sheer egotistical vanity slings mud at men and things which his little mind cannot appreciate. The Unemployed difficulty is upon us with unexampled intensity. Pasto Birch is most active m alleviating distress. He has had Lane's old mill m Hereford Street fitted up as a Night ! Shelter for men who have been sleep- ' ing out m the Park. His action is a most praiseworthy one tut it is giving rise to the very severest criticisms at. the Apathy of the Charitable Aid Board. • ; The St John Burlesque Company -. will open at the Theatre on Saturday J It is time we had some liveliness for' one sees nothing m Christchurch but' long and dismal faces. Our newly elected members accept their parliamentary duties m a variety of ways. The Prohibition member for Christchurch Mr Smith appears to, consider it extremely hard that he should be put to so much trouble as to • have to sign a receipt every month for; his "screw." Mr W. W. Collins on the other hand considers it his duty! to be actively employed m the interests of bis constituents. He goes to j Wellington on the 14th, but will re-j turn before, this is m print. ; s - •■/ : """ ~~ ■'.-...-- . ...... ..„.. i
