LOCAL PREACHERS AND MONKEYS.

To the editor of ' The Observer. Sir, —What a mixture, " Ringtail" has given us of faces, — monkeys, scorpions, local preachers and brimstone. I nearly said that " Ringtail " was evidently a believer m Darwin's theory, but he goes farther. We are not decended from monkeys. We are monkeys still. I would like to draw "Ringtails" attention to the fact that the" Local Child" did not see a monkey. Now, I have seen pictures of his " Satanic, Majesty" m which he looked very much like a monkey.. Is it not within the bounds of possibility that Mr Satan was wandering about View Hill on that memorable evening, and unable to resist the burning eloquence of the preacher, came to the window ? If such was the case, what a pity he did not go inside ; I'll warrant he would have had a rough time of it. Another thought has struck me, perhaps but I will not give expression to it. I -will simply advise the " Local Child " should a monkey appear at the window again, to notice very particularly whether it is a ringtailed monkey or not. , Yours &c, . Gentjjle.

To the Editor of the " Ohserrer." -Sir, — By the courtesy of a neighbor, I was favored to-day -with the perusal of your last issue. I experienced much pleasureand satisfaction m learning how your various public institutions e.g., Eoad Board* School Committee &o. are progressing, and the va:iou3 changes m their personnel and oramatists'prrsnncr, and should have restart m contentment and satisfied vsilence but for the one " vexed question," which seems at prosent to be a hone of contention in r yonr midst. I refer to the " Mechanic? Institute,' 1 together with the books belonging thereto, the general stagnation into which the affair hn.« fallen, and what had best be done m order to bring about a more desirable state of affairs. Now. Sir, I believe I need scarcely remind you that so far as the books m your Library are concerned, Oxford can hold up her head not only with any township of her size, but with many others laying claim to much greater pretansions. Loyal and true hearts have worked with honest zeal and pride m the r : selections of those books; those workers have freely burned the midnight oil m order that their own and future generations should be benefitted by their labor of love. That the financial condition of the Library is m a dormant or stagnant • state, goes without saying, and the question becomes, What shall be done by way- of , remedy ? As a sincere well wisher of . your township, I would venture to suggest that inasmuch as you now have "Pearson Park," a boon and credit to the place, why not sink that miserable " East and West," nonsense (only worthy of children m the , ntfrjtery) and work together like men for the common 'good, and remove your books, and if possible your building to the Park, and become an united community dispite the tepid croaking of weik-taa-drinking inspired gospel grinding dissenters who always will throw cold water on everything m the* shape .of • human kindness if it • soar above the scope of their narrow intel-r lect or fail to further the ends of their petty creels. , Yours, &c, '"A Rustical Oxonian."
