TRAGEDY AT A FIRE.
TEN' LIVES LOST.
GIRLS JUMP TO DEATH
LONDON, December 24
A disastrous fire occurred in office buildings in the centre of Newcastle. A large number of employees, including many girl clerks, were trapped and compelled to jump from a height of 90ft into sheets held in the roadway. Several missed the sheets and others were burned with fatal results, a total of ten deaths being recorded.
The fire was due to the explosion of celluloid in a film depot. The flames leapt up the well of the lift to the top floor.
