THE ZUYDER ZEE.

The Zuyder Zee, or Southern Sea, was formerly.a kite surrounded by fens and marshes, its pfeswit extent being chiefly the result of floods which occurred in the thirteenth century. its area is about two thousand square miles, and the nv«raze depth from ten to nineteen feet. It has always hoen the work of the Hollanders to recover as much as nossble of tho kind lost to them in tliis- manner in past ages, and in tho literal sen.so they can be said'to have 'made hnlf their country, bavin™ reclaimed over one million acres fron sen, lake, and river since the sixte nth century.
