THE MAORIS.

A BRIGHTER OUTLOOK,

Real splendid work has been done with the Maoris. In'all about forty cases Jiave been taken to the temporary hospital, and although there has b,een several deaths,- these were expected as the patients were in a critical stage when they were brought in on Thursday afternoon. Further cases are still coming in from as far as Tui Pa, due to the fact that the Te Aroha centre has acted in too parochial a spirit, which is to be very much regretted in this severe struggle. The hospital is under the supervision of Nurse Nock and, with the willing assistance given her, there is now. a decidedly better tone amongst the patients and the work generally which is all thoroughly well organised. At the commencement of this hospital and before arrangements were organised the work of supervision fiell very heavily upon a few to whom great credit is due.

Of the Maoris oie Waitoki settlement has suffered the most so far, twenty-four having died of the disease, the majority having died before the matter was taken in hand,

During the past week all the native settlements have been visited by Nurse Kimble, who left for Thames on Saturday night.
