HIKUTAIA BASKET SOCIAL
The basket social held at Hikutaia on Thursday evening was a huge success, there being present a large number of dancers, including some from Paeroa and Thames. Mr Walters was M.C. and Mr S. Bax chairman. Before the dancing, commenced Mr Walters, MX., introduced the Queen of the Valley in a few well chosen remarks and in concluding presented her with a beautiful boquet on behalf of the residents. Mr Bax in reply said they were all working for the Red Cross, and not for any particular queen, although'he would like to see the Valley queen on top. The Union Jack and Stars and Stripes were in evidence in the hall decorations, and he was pleased they were fighting sid-> by side at the front. The National Anthem opened the proceedings. The Valley Queen's basket realised £48 6s, and the late, queen, Mrs Corbett's/£35 12s. Five other baskets were sold at big prices, averaging £5. Mr Lucas, with the assistance of a constable from Paeroa, conducted the art union dray/ings with the following results : Travelling bag, given by Hetheringtons, Ltd., Mr W. J. Hall, Matatoki; oak chest, Mr Alf. Alley; and the : mare "Pet," Mr McLean, Netherton.
