REMITS FOR FARMERS' UNION,

Several remits dealing with Defence matters, reinforcements, and shirkers from military service have been set down for discussion at the annual cnoference of the New Zealand Farmers' Union. . With regard to the provision of .future reinforcements, the Wellington and Southland Unions have forwarded the following resolutions: "That the Farmers' Union assures the Prime MinisteK^that the producers will support the Government in carrying into effect any measures which the Government deem necessary to take in sending additional reinforpe-^. ments to help the Empire at C4(M^P^ critical time."

A remit from the Wellington Union favours the disfranchisement of any man who refuses to carry out his military duties..

Two important remits dealing with exemptions, and "sine die" cases have been submitted from North Canterbury. They read as follows : "That whereas a large number of reservists are not obtaining exemption whose retention in the country is essential in the public interest, we suggest that provision should be made whereby every case shall be investigated by the local committee of advice^of x the district in which the reservist re- ' sides, such committee to report to the advisory committee stating whether, in their opinion, the reservist could serve his country better by remaining, or being sent to camp."

"That as many men whose. appeals have been adjourned sine die, condi-. tionally on their remaining engaged in the industries in whose interests they were granted exemption, are known, not to be fulfilling these conditions, we suggest that these men ' „' should report to the local advisory--^ committee monthly." The Hawke's Bay Union recommends that Territorial camps should be abolished during the period of the war.
