THAMES COUNTY CLERK.

ENLISTS AS CAPTAIN

At Tuesday's meeting of the Thames County Council a letter was read from "thejclerk,; Mr ;W- S. Clark* stating that he bad. been/called up for active service, and had received instruction to report to Wellington on, the :. 15th ihfit.- f

On the motion of theXhalrman it was decided to grant him leave ot absence.

Councillor Claxton moved " that the Council place on record its appreciation of the action of Captain Clark in enlisting for the defence of the Empire." The motion was carried by acclamation. Councillor Cooper expressed his appreciation of the action ot their clerk and complimented him on his attainments in the military profession. He trusted that Captain CJark would be spared, to return and again conduct the business oi the Council.

Councillor-Law also expressed appreciation of the action of. their Clerk and mentioned that Captain Shand whose two sons had been wounded was also leaving the town to fight their battles. The other Councillors present also spoke in terms of appreciation. Captain Clark returned thanks,' to the Councillors for their kind words. He stated that he was 1 offered ■an appointment in the mam body, but circumstances over which he had no control prevented him from accepting it. However as' soon as those circumstances altered, he volunteered for service and was pleased to accept his present appointment.

All the Councillors present agreed that it was their duty to keep the position open for Captain Clark should he be spared to return.

The matter of making a temporary appointment was leit in the hands of the Chairman.
