The Ohinemuri Gazette. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 10, 1915. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

% ♦...,' ■ ' . : An advertiser wishes to purchase a cottage of about tour rooms in Paeroa. Messrs Corbett and" Gwilham notify that they have received a consignment of particularly new furniture from Morrinsville for sale next Saturday afternoon. " Go to Donnelly's for Boots," is the head line ot a new two-column advertisement on our second page. The new bridge at Hikutaia is nearly finished, and will probably be taken over by the Thames County Council in the course of a few days. In the course of the hearing of an action for alleged libel, Mr Justice Hbsktag'said that newspapers might be held responsible for a libel for publishing a cause list ot Supreme Court cases, and Court officers also for giving them the list. • Perhaps some of the housewives of this district may be able to explain this puzzle, says the Feliding Star :—A lady entered two exhibits at the show in one class. For the sake of convenience we shall call them plum puddings. They were made, irom one mixture and cooked together—in fact they were twin puddings.' Yet, while one did not'eve.n.pfet .commended, the other was awarded first prize. ~

Members of the Thames County Council recently paid a visit of inspe-tion to the "Hastings Riding so as to see what vvorks are necessary in that part ol the district. The policy of inspection is to be continued at an early date, the next portion of the County to be visited being the Totara, Puriri, and Hikutaia Ridings, and during the trip the members will have a look at the new bridge at Hikutaia. " ; \ Although the Thames County Council keeps a separate account for the .water race, it has not been its custom to charge anything against the account for administration expenses. At yesterday's meeting it was decided to alter this by charging of the engineer's salary and £2$ ot the clerk's salary per annum against the account.

The Thames Council is endeavouring to secure a, substantial loan to enable certain necessary ,works to be carried out, so there was a chorus of approval at yesterday's meeting of that body when a letter from a financial firm was read offering to arrange loans on favourable terms. With one accord, the members decided that the firm.be written to and all particulars obtained. The sad news of the death of Mr R. R. Faull was received in Paeroa yesterday by cable from Sydney. Some three weeks ago the late Mr Faull, accompanied by his wife, left Paeroa on a holiday to Sydney in the hopes that the trip would benefit his health. Mr Faull has been a resident of Paeroa jfor some ten years past, and had resided in Corbett Street. As a wheelwright he was highly spoken of as being a first-class tradesand'worked for some years with the firm ot Messrs Ellis and Hunt, and for the past four years with Messrs Brenan'and Co.

Considerable improvement has been made to the offices of the Thames County Council in Mary Street, Thames. The whole of the interior ot the building has been renovated, and it now presents a much more comfortable appearance than it did formerly, while the alterations in the arrangements enable the staff to conduct the business with greater expedition than formerly.' It was also decided at yesterday's County Council meeting to have the exterior oi the offices painted, it being stated that it was ten years since the work was done, Have you been to P. Now is your opportunity. — Advt The necessity of exercising great care in the handling of benzine, which has a tendency to flare up on the slightest provocation, was forcibly illustrated at Okato the other evening (says the DannevirkeNews). A Maori car owner was opening a tin of benzine on the roadside outside Fox's store, where he had purchased it, and for the purpose used a chisel, with which he made a stab at the tin. The impact created a spark, which ignited the benzine, and in a moment there was a hugh flame twenty or thirty feet'high. For a time the care was in danger, but it was moved to a place of safety, '
