LATE JAMES MACKAY.

FUNERAI, AT PAEROA. J MESSAGES OF CONDOLENCE The funeral of the late James Mackay took place at Paeroa on Saturday afternoon, the last sad rites being conducted by the Rev. Cowie. Chief amongst the mourners were Dr Smith (representing Mrs Mackay), Mr H. R. Brunskill (deceased's son-in-law), Mr W. McCullough and Mr W. G. Nicholls (two very friends of the deceased), Mr Ei'W. Porritt, and Mr D. T. Inglis. Floral emblems were forwarded, by various friends and organisations, including one from the Ohinemuri Agricultural and Horticultural Society, ot which Mr Mackay had been a life member. A large number of messages of condolence were also received. The Hon. W. H. Herries, Minister for Native Affairs, wired as follows: "Allow me as Native Minister to express my high appreciation of the work done by ' your late husband, and also to express on behalf of my department their sincere sympathy with you in your bereavement." -; The wire from the Under-Secretary Justice Department was as follows:— " I very much regret to hear of Mr James Mackay's death. He was very old and highly esteemed public servant, and by his demise we lose another link with the past." Other messages ot condolence received included those from the Hon. W. H. .D. Baillie,. M.L.C., Hon. W. H. Herries, Mr H. Poland, M.P., Mr A. E. Giover, M.P., Mr R. T. Bush (Greymodth) and Mr P. J. O'Regan (Wellington). It is interesting to recall some of.the many appointments held during his lifetime by the late Mr James Mackay. . Amongst them were the following:— 15th May, 1856, Justice of the Peace for the Province of Nelson; 6th October, 1859, Resident Magistrate and Justice of the Peace for the Colony of New Zealand; 7th October, 1859, Coroner for the district ot .Massacre Bay; 14th, October, 1859, Receiver of Land Revenue under the " Goidfields Act, / 1858;" 7111 October, 1859, delegated powers of Governor jndcr ' the " Goldfields Act, 1858," Nelson goldfield; 25th November, 1859, delegated powers of Governor, Westland goldfield; 13th October, iB6O, returning officer, Collingwood ; 3rd November, 1860, electoral officer, Collingwood; sth December, 1860, returning officer, Massacre Bay; ' 15U1 December, iB6O, registration officer, Collingwood; 9111 November, • 1863, Native Commissioner and Assistant Native Secretary; sth December, 1863, Commissioner for Native intestate estates, Takaka ; 10th May, 1864, Civil Commissioner for Waihou District under " Native Districts Regulation Act; " 17th May, 1864, Commissioner to administer the oath ot allegiance under " Native Districts Regulation Act, 185S;" Bth July, 1864, Civil Commissioner for the Colony of New Zealand ; SUI December, 1864, Civil Commissioner for Hauraki District; 7th January, 1865, • 'Judge ot Compensation Court under " The New Zealand Settlements Act, 1863;" 3rd April," 1865, Judge ot the - Native Land Court; 2ict July, 1565, granted a pass through all European and Native military lines ; 29th November, 1567, -Resident Magistrate, Warden, Coroner, etc., for the Hauraki district; 18th November, 1879, Resident Magistrate, Warden, Coroner, etc., Nelson and Westland Districts.
