SPORTS NOTES.

There has been little tennis played this week, the reason obviously being that a good many ot the players are s making the necessary preparations for the Christmas holidays. In the ladies> ladder matches, Mrs Bush easily defeated Mrs Brunsktll, Miss Hubbard defeated Miss Gibbons, and Miss Coote in a later match defeated Miss Hubbard. The ladies generally are improving, and the ladder matches are evidently providing the incentive for practice. In the semi-final of the combined doubles, Edwards and Miss Walmsley (handicap 25) defeated Matthews and Miss Kenny (18), the scores being 80-65. This game created quite an interest amongst the members of the club, and a great many keenly watched a very evenly contested, match. The final will be played on Saturday afternoon between Edwards and Miss Walmsley and Bush and Mrs Bush, and this should prove an interesting match. The two players showing most im-~~-~proved form during the week are Mr Wyn Edwards and Miss Hubbard, and more will undoubtedly be heard of these players later in the season. A new member is Mr Hinton who plays a very solid game. The players on the top of the ladder will require to practise to ensure holding their positions against this player, On the croquet lawns Mrs Murphy and Miss Shaw are the most regular players. Mrs Murphy plays a very good game indeed. The Thames Valley polo team will visit Hamilton on Saturday week to play a return match with the Hamilton A team. The players are practising very hard at present with the hope of securing a win. The captain, Mr Meredith, will be playing for a Christchurch team during the Christmas vacation.
