GOLDFIELDS STARS.

Waihi sent a strong team, skipped by Noonan, to Paeroa on Wednesday afternoon to endeavour to secure the Goldfields challenge stars. McWatters and his men, of Paeroa, proved, however, just a little bit too good, and at the finish the

Paeroa team was leading by one point. The game was a splendidly contested one, and was one of the best games yet played on the Paeroa green. A considerable number of spectators watched the contest, and any good play-; was applauded impartially. The greatest number of points between the teams was on the thirteenth" head, when Paeroa was leading by 14 points to nine. Waihi, however, secured six on the next head, and was then leading by one point. On the nineteenth head the score was iS all. Then Waihi obtained a single, and on the last head Paeroa secured two

and won by a point. The visitors were entertained at afternoon tea by the lady friends of the local bowlers. Following are the teams :—Paeroa—Bray, Pocock, Hamilton, McWatters (skip) 20 v. Waihi—Williams, Vercoe, Sampson, Noonan (skip) 19.

The Paeroa Club's challenge medal changed hands once more on Wednesday, when Clews (challenger) defeated Shaw (holder) by 17 points to 16. The game was a decidedly interesting one. On the sixteenth head Shaw was nine points down, but he played up well, and nearly pulled the game out of the fire. Requiring four points to tie on the last head, he obtained three and just missed the lourth one. Clews is playing remarkably well for a beginner, and will probably be one of the best players in the club by the end of the season. Challenges for the medal are now in from Taylor, Tonge 3 McGeehin, and Shaw in that order.

Yesterday afternoon Allan and Gadd (challengers) endeavoured to secure the Paeroa challenge buckles from Me Wat - ters and Harris (holders), but the holders proved just a little bit too good and they defeated the challengers by two points.
