LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The Ohinenuiri County Council holds its usual monthly meeting on Thursday afternoon at one o'clock.

A six-roomed house in Paeroa, together with over four acres ot land, is advertised for sale.

Attention is directed to a prominent advertisement in this issue by Mr W. J. Adnams, the well-known Paeroa grocer and provision merchant. We regret to learn that Mr A. Cassrels is in such bad health that he is being removed to the Thames Hospital this afternoon. Owing to the heavy rain on Saturday morning, the tennis match between Paeroa and Karangahake was postponed. A reminder is given of the annual meeting ot householders in the Masonic Hall to-m6rrow evening in connection with the Paeroa Fire Brigade. The many friends of Mr J. Silcock, of Paeroa, will regret to learn that he is seriously ill, and that his condition is such as to cause his relatives much anxiety. Very heavy rain tell yesterday, lasting from early morning until evening. About six o'clock it cleared somewhat, and to-day it is fine again. The river rose considerably yesterday, but as it had previously been very low, there was not much chance of a flood.

At the Auckland Show last Saturday Mr W. J. Hall secured a first and champion award with his Jersey bull. Mr E. J. Clendon, of Thames, obtained a first with Alba Rose for "horses under 15 hands two inches," and the same animal was placed second in the class for " trotting horses, to be shown in harness, speed and action considered."

Af the Auckland Competitions Society, the judge announced on Saturday that he had awarded the gold medals for the premier vocalists to Miss G. Evans, of" Paeroa, amongst the ladies, and Mr W. Aspinall, of Auckland, amongst the gentlemen. These two competitors also secured first award for the duet (lady and gentleman).

Ladies, tor your own comfort and economy we would strongly advise you to wear only the Roslyn unshrinkable summer weight underwear " Delta" finish, together with Warner's rustproof corsets. Obtainable all drapers and storekeepers.

On Thursday morning when coming along the railway line near the Parawai railway station Ganger Petty discovered an obstruction between the points where the siding line joins the main Thames to Paeroa line. On closer inspection he found that a large stone had been wedged between the points and then covered with sand. The matter was at once reported to the police and Detective Cooney was instrumental in bringing the offender (a Maori boy about ten years of age) to book. Before Magistrate Burgess on Saturday the boy pleaded guilty to the oftence and was severely admonished. Luckily Ganger Petty discovered the obstruction before the morning train passed or there would, in all probability, have been a serious accident to chronicle. —Thames Advertiser.

When the Scottish Agricultural Commissioners visited the New South Wales Government farm at Berry, a cow of great type, Calm 11, bred on the farm, was rn,uch admired. Mr Dur.lop, who is lecturer and demonstrator of live stock to the West of Scotland Agricultural College, declared that she was a better cow than the one he, as judge, had placed first at the Royal Show in England. He inquired of the manager what price this cow would bring in New South Wales. The reply was ,£250 to Mr Dunlop remarked that it was evident the value of Guernseys of this class was not known in the State. This particular animal would, he said, bring 1000 guineas in England, as she was superior to the Royal winner, for which that sum was refused.

• : Professor OsDorn, ot the Physiological School at the University, Melbourne, in the course of a speech last week, said the Australian League of Girl Aids did not want women who screamed, and who showed that they were not fit for the position they occupied. " I don't think the modern wpman is so much given to screaming as was, say, the early Victorian," said the professor, " nor is the modern woman given to swooning. Screaming may be said to be feminine and instinctive, having a twofold significance, to disconcert the enemy when attacked, because they are not well equipped by Nature for the muscular response involved in fighting or running. To keep still and screech is the feminine Way. Most women are better physically now than they were. More attention has been paid to their physical culture. They have come out into the world and they are stronger mentally. Women who are trained physically and mentally to look at life soberly and at danger with equanimity now and again betray their sex by vocalisation of a high pitch and intensity At the water chutes, for instance, and on gravity railways they often scream from pleasureable excitement. Whether they would do.it in the absence ot the other sex is an interesting psychological question." If your baby is teething during the summer months you must guard against dysentery and bowel complaints. Keep a bottle of Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy in the house and at the first unusual looseness of the bowels give it a dose. Sold by all chemists and storekeepers.
