THE NEW LIQUOR LAW.

BOWLING CLUBS' STOCK

IN NO-LICENSE DISTRICTS

[By Electric Telegraph.]

Wellington, November 26.

The Governor's hand, in the name of the King, has been set to the new Licensing Act, and it is now in force. One effect has quickly followed. Bowling clubs whose premises-are within nolicense areas have been busily clearing out stocks of liquor, which once helped to sauce or spice the quiet joys of the green. It is rumoured that the men of one club (oiled till three o'clock in the morning depleting the lockers of stored comforts for hot afternoons. This activity is promoted by section 36, which, strikes at the locker system in no-license districts in two ways. This section provides that no building, room, or other premises in any no-license district shall be kept or used as a place of resort for the consumption of intoxicating liquor, and for the purpose of this section the premises shall be deemed to be a place of resort for the drinking of such liquor, notwithstanding the fact that they are open only for the use of particular members or particular classes of persons, and are not open to all persons desirous of using them. Further, it is unlawful for any person to keep liquor in a nolicense district for any other person, or to permit or suffer any building to be used by any other person for the purpose of storing or keeping liquor. Bowling clubs are not the only sufferers; other clubs, Masonic, Savage, or otherwise, are in the same box. Boardinghouses, private hotels, and similar premises have the same provisions applied.
