Two men named Brown and Young were firing shots at the 300 ft level in the Senate mine when one went off before Brown, reached the ladder, and a piece of rock struck and injured him. Young jumped from the ladder, and was assist-, ing his wounded companion to climb when a second shot exploded, and a flying stone injured Young's hip. In spite of his own injuries he persevered till he placed Brown in safety. The task was more perilous owing to a running fusilade of 13 other shots exploding beneath them.
