Yesterday we were shown a wellbuilt and highly-finished- sulky which has just been completed in Mr W. Sorensen's coach building factory. It is painted in tan and varnish; relieved with gold lines, and trimmed in the best style and material. The box and front board are in natural wood, American ash. It has Mail patent axles and a very comfortable spring cushion, and should be admirably suitable for the local roads. The whole turn-out reflects great credit on the builder, Mr Soiensen, who also designed it.

Strong exception is being taken by prominent officials of the Miners' Union against clause 18 of the Mining Act Amendment Bill, which provides that " where in any proceedings against any person (other than the holder of a chum which is actually being worked or a licensed gold dealer) for stealing gold it is proved that he was at any time within six months preceding the commencement of the proceedings in possession of gold of or exceeding the weight ot one and a half ounces it shall lie on him to prove that he came by that gold lawfully." It is held that the clause is a reflection upon the good name and honesty of miners as a whole, and that instead of placing the onus of proving his innocence upon the suspected person, the prosecution should be compelled to establish its allegation ot guilt on the principle that a man is innocent until he is proved guilty. They maintain that according to the clause every suspected person is guilty until he himself proves his innocence.—Waihi Telegraph.

To the average person the sight of a man carrying a number ot sheets ot roofing iron would not suggest any suspicions, but it was by following such a substantial clue (says the Lyttelton Times) that two ot the Christchurch detectives discovered a series of petty thetts that might be included among the most remarkable in New Zealand criminology. From a house in Richmond they have recovered a strange collection ot articles, all ot which are said to have been stolen. Displayed in one ot the buildings at the police station, they formed a queer exhibition of misplaced industry. Carpenters' tools, in numbers sufficient for a dozen builders, predominated, and there were all kinds ot things from field glasses and hand cameras to curtain rings and roofing iron, from female clothing to mitre-boxes. A lathe built up from stolen parts, a complete cash till, and some dozens ot keys were included in the queer collection. By the inscription on a hand bag the collector of these articles claimed to be a magician, but there was something paradoxical in the idea ot a necromancer running a side line in second-hand goods. Apparently this magician extended his operations to Australia, for included in the exhibition were post-cards bearing addresses in Bathurst and : Goulburn. Insult was surely added to injury when he helped himself to some of the timber with which a house was being built for one ot the detectives. He concealed it in the structure of a hen house, but the detective recognised his property and gleefully laid it alongside a preserving pan that had been appropriated from one of the relatives of the force. Ladies, for your own comtort and economy we would strongly advise you to wear only the Roslyn unshrinkable summer weight underwear " Delta" finish, together with Warner's rustproof corsets. Obtainable all drapers and storekeepers.

The Paeroa Band will render a programme ot musical selections in the main street to-morrow night.

We are pleased to note that Mr G. Crosby, who has been confined to his bed for some days past, is slightly better this morning. j

Notice is given by the Waihi Borough Council that the new road to Waihi Beach will be open tor traffic on and after Wednesday next, 30th inst. The Mayor of Waihi invites all who can make it convenient on that date to make use of the road in visiting the beach.

A handy little booklet regarding its new mail steamers has reached us from the office of the New Zealand Shipping Company. Particulars are given ot the passenger accommodation on the steamers specially built for the passenger trade between New Zealand and England, and a number of very fine illustrations give some idea of the luxury of modern travelling.

At Nelson a dearth ot female and boy labour is reported by the Labour Journal. Owing to the fact that the demand exceeds the supply, a great deal of overtime is being worked in the confectionery arid jam factories. There are also many applications tor labour for the fruit and hop season.

An Ashburton resident who lit several Ores at night recently to attract grass grubs, which are now on the wing, states that the beetles were piled to a depth of several inches withm a radius of a tew yards from the fires, while a smaller fire was extinguished by the moths.

Last year the sum 0/^2258 was collected from slygrog selling and drinkers, and there were 235 ot them dealt with, an increase of 76 over the previous year. The direct cost to the dominion in detecting and proseciuing sly-grog selling during the year was or less than was collected by way of fines.

A rather serious position has arisen with regard to the water supply in Waimate A number of residents were alleged to have been wasting water by using it tor garden purposes, and the water in the reservoir was so short on Monday afternoon that a special meeting of the Borough Council was called to consider the position. It was decided that two lns^fectors should be appointed for the inspection of the house supplies, and consumers were urged to conserve the water as much as possible.

Much disappointment (says the " Dominion") is felt" by settlers in the Wanganui district because of inadequate provision in the estimates for stock roads in that part of the island. There is a heavy loss of stock in the district every year through the absence ot reasonably good roads. It was hoped that ample provision would be made for improving the Wanganui River Road and the Missing Link. Road. Respecting stock losses, which are mentioned above, here is an example. A man living on one side of the river at Ahuahu, bought a mob of sheep at a place about twenty miles away across the river. There was no direct connection, and he had to take the stock home by such a roundabout route that the trip occupied ten days, and he lost 20 per cent of his sheep on the way, and most of his losses occurred through the sheep falling down hills, tumbling over cliffs, and getting bogged. A ferry is now in operation at the place where the unlucky farmer should have been able to cross. The case stated is given as a fair sample ot what some of the settlers still have to contend with.
