MODEL TOWN.
CORRUPTION To BK BARRED
American philanthropp is financing the building ,of a town in Kentucky,
near Evansville, on the Ohio River, where people may live in happiness and abide by the p-olden rule, where all the
public, services will .be owned by the people, and who will share in the profits where there will be no.public-houses and no public officials, and where, if the hopes are now entertained are realised, there will be no graft. The scheme is financially backed by Mrs Kate Hawley, New York, and Mr James Crawford, Terre Haute, Indiana.
Once a week all the residents of the
town.will gather in the Colosseum and bring to trial all persons charged with crimes, the people as a body voting on the guilt or innocence of the accused. It is declared that Kentucky will grant a. charter for this municipal experiment, which is also supported by inhabitants of Evansville, Indiana, a town situated on the Ohio River, precisely opposite the site selected for the model city, the aforesaid inhabitants being doubtless favourably influenced by the promise of free transportation to and from the new settlement for the purpose of employment. • So far, it is claimed, no town in the United States has been absolutely free from graft, and whether under present circumstances, and more particularly in view of the universal apathy which exists as regards municipal administration, a town can exist without graft is a problem which many Americans desire to see solved.
