THAMES VALLEY POLO.

THE OPENING DAY

The rain which set in on. Friday evening last and continued all Saturday marred to some extent the anticipated public success of the polo opening. As a team from Hamilton had however come down, despite the weather, it was decided to hold the formal opening, and a match was played between Messrs Yule, Hunter, Worsp and Dodds, representing Hamilton, and Messrs Meredith, Bush, and Hubbard Bros., representing Thames Valley. The ground was perhaps a httle soft, but in a very playable condition, with the result that a most interesting game was indulged in between two evenly contested teams. The general fitness of the ponies and the good hitting of the players accounted for a very fast and open game, in which from start to finish intense interest was maintained. The game was played in six spells of 10 minutes each. Hamilton with strong play scored two goals in the first spell but in the second spell Thames Valley awakened to the situation and equalised matters, scores being two all. The game, now became very willing and each team had its time of defending and attacking. For two spells no goals were scored. In the fifth spell both teams with accurate hit-

ting scored goals, scores being now three all. For the final spell both teams entered the field level. Thames Valley, through being perhaps a little over zealous,;missed some certain goals, and just on time Hamilton scored a goal from a free hit. The final score thus resulted in Hamilton's favour by one goal. For Hamilton each player scored a goal, and for Thames Valley A. C Hubbard scored all three goals. The game was a very friendly one, and the true sporting element was keen throughout. Mr Hanna officiated as referee, and gave every satisfactionAfternoon tea was kindly supplied by Miss Hubbard, and was much enjoyed by the players, who were particularly warm after the strenuous games. The members -of the Hamilton team were afterwards treated to a small dinner beiore leaving on the " wild cat" for home,- In defiance of the weather a very enjoyable tune was spent. It is the intention of the Polo Club to have a sports afternoon at an early date, when the public will have an opportunity of witnessing what might be termed " the

sport of. kings."
