Wesleyan Sunday School. Anniversary Services.
The anniversary services in connection with the Paeroa Wesloyan Sunday School were held in the Criterion Theatre and proved most successful and enjoyable. The seats in the body of the Hall had been turned.round -to face the gallery where the children, choir and orchestra were placed. The bright smiling faces of the children who were clothed in festive array, as befitted such an important occasion must have greatly impressed all those who were present at the services. The singing of the children was splendid, every hymn being sung 'tuaefully and with spirit, and Mr Jas. Eeid who trained the children certainly has every reason to be proud of the result of his labour. The congregation at both morning and evening service was very large. The Uev. D. J. Murray, of the Thames preaching eloquent, instructive, and appropriate services. During the evening service Mr W. Rowe of Waitekauri gave a splendid rendition of the sacred solo " Calvary." In the afternoon the hall was crowded to hear the Service of Song " Primrose Garth " which was given by the Sunday School children and choir. Among the audience were the teachers and scholars attending the Episcopalian and Presbyterian Sunday schools, both of which were closed for the afternoon. The connective readings of that pathetic story " Primrose Garth " were given by the Eev. D. 0. Murray. The various musical numbers were very prettily given by the children. The most pleasing items were however the solo " Dark below but light above" by Miss Gentil and a duet " Surrender "by Misses Miller and Morrison, a solo was also given by Mr Ensor, and a quartette by Misses Daisy and Gwendoline Evans, May Burgess, and Eileen Short. The aftlrnoon was thus passed in a very instructive and enjoyable manner and it is a pity that with the musical talent, Paeroa evidently possesses, we do not oftener have a " Service of Song" or " cantata,"
Miss Vuglar presided at the organ during the three services, being accompanied by an orchestra comprising Thames, Karangahake and Paeroa friends. At the close of the evening service Mr Jas Reid thanked all who had assisted in making the anniversary a success.
In past years it has been the custom to hold a soiree on the evening following, but this year a departure is to be'made. A Christmas tree and social evening will be held shortly, when the ann.ua! presentation ' 6f prizes will take place,
