Arrest at Karangahake.
A few days ago it was reported to the police at Te Aroha that a srurious sovereign had been passed at a business place there. In connection with this, a young man was arrested at Karangahake on Saturday night, charged with passing the coin in question to Mrs Smardon at the Palace Hotel, Te Aroha. Immediately upon the matter becoming known, the manager of the Crown Mines battery, who has worked with accused for a number of years, and holding the opinion that some mistake had occured, interested himself on accused's behalf. The result was that instead of accused having to remain in the lockup all day Sunday, Mr. Moresdy, clerk of the court, and Mr. Hamilton, J.P.,kindly consented to do duty at ten o'clock on Saturday night, by having a sitting of the Court. The accused was charged with the offence, and remanded to Te Aroha, bail being allowed, himself in £100, and two sureties of £50 each. The recognisances were immediately forthcomings and accused w£s" liberated. We are informed that tho young man had several shillings in his pocket for some time while at work in the Crown Battery, ■which time had washed with gold. One of these he handed to Mrs Sroardon, but did not know himself whether it was a real sovereign or not, remarking, if it was not to let him know-
