WAIHI NOTES.

By fi Pbndennis."

A POPULAR WEDDING. Last Wednesday was the scene o' another wedding in Waihi, the con" tracting parties-being Miss B. Toomey, ■> —one time waitress at Tanner's Hotel, , -a^'i Morris Orimmins, the popular w young driver of-Dan Campbell's mail coach. If the old saying hold good, " Blessed be the bride the sun shines on,'' then the new-named Mrs Crimmins has in store for her a very blessed existence indeed for the day was a. perfect' one. The ceremony, which was largely attended, was performed in the new Catholic Church by Father Hackett,, and took place at three o'clock. "The bride who was charmingly dressed, (I don't know what she * wore, but you see I'm only a man !) was accompained by her sister, whilst Morris had chosen for Ms best man Mr Walter Dance. Aiter the happy event was brought to a close, the, newly married couple took a drive in one of Campbell's new buggies drawn by the two best chestnuts in the stable. All the way up and down the main street Morris had to continually lift his hat in.response to congratulations shouted, signalled, and waved to him from all directions. Mr and Mrs Crimmins will reside in a neat little house put up for them by Mrs Tanner. Good luck, long, life, and continued prosperity be EXIT THE SPIRITUALIST. Our Mend the Magnumopus, whom I named last week" as having advertised himself by professing to be' a spiritualist, has left us. He managed so I hear, to dispose of his magnumopus for £35 before he went. This price seems very low, .according to the figure he stated he had paid for it, but somehow or other I think the £300 odd he put on it was a bit over the mark. At any rate my spirits toll me that the instrument was bought from Messrs Collier and Co., for £30. But of course my spirits may know nothing about it. . SANITATION. The Miner calls attentionin a leader in Tuesday's issue to the need of proper sanitary arrangements here. And none too soon. It certainly is a 1 question that demands immediate attention. Last summer we were lucky enough to escape any form of epidemic^ barring one wave of cholera morbus, but this summer we find ourselves with a largely increased population and consequently a greater need of (proper drainage and other sanitary precautions. It is to "be hoped the County Council will see this necessity and at otfce act upon it. THE DRAMATIC CLUB. Our amateurs .returned frpm Paeroa on Sunday thoroughly delighted with their trip and its success. They are all much impressed by. the lsindness received from everyone there. This Club will be ready with a strong triple bill (including two farces) on November 3rd. They play on that night and the following one in aid of Hospital Fund and a fund to be raised for Mr 1. J. May who was injured some time ago by falling down a pass in the Martha mine, and is now a cripple. Arrangements are afoot for a trip to the Thames in aid of that Hospital. MINING. Interesting news may be looked for . from the Waihi West before long. On 'Monday night a mass of quartz springers came to hand in the South crosscut with, a: heavy inrusn of water. Since then operations have been suspended to allow of a larger pump to be placed in position and for the fixing of V blower- to expel the foul gas accumulating. .Probably work will be resumed on Monday night, the reef may be cut at any moment afterwards. Great improvements are being made at the Waihi battery. The dust evil is rapidly being made a thing of the past by the ,powerful suction fan arrangements now in use At present the dust chamber for the storage;of escaping dust is unfinished, but when it is ready a saving of a considerable amount of gold may be expected. An enormous engine bed measuring 6.oft by 15jt and 14ft deep has been excavated and .jailed, with concrete. Here an engine is to be placed to drive the stampers'in the dry weathers, when water power fails.- By the bye, I hear that the Waihi Company's next return will te a magnificent one.
