AN ARTFUL DODGER.
When the late Dr Guthrie came to be minister of Grej-iriars, Edinburgh, he made a point of visiting every family, in the.parish, that he might become acquainted with each and secure, if possible, their regular attendance at public worship. In doing this, he encountered many strange characters, and witnessed many strange scenes. One day he visited an old woman, who pretended to be a regular churchgoer—:" one who was • never absent a day when she could help it." Mr GuthrieVas doubtful of this, and asked her, "What church do you attend? " " Oh," replied the crone, "I gang to hear that godly man, Dr Inglis, o' the Greyfriars, just up by there ; a quid minister he is, and he kens me weel." At this time Dr Ihgli^ had been dead "several years, so Dr Guthrie said, '• But you can't hear Dr Inglis now; Dr Inglis is dead.' " Eh, is he deid ?" ejaculated the crone; " weel, ye see, I didna' ken." " Yes, he has been dead several'years, and I have been minister of the Greyfriars now for. some time," said the minister. "Weel, ye see, sir," was the cool rejoinder," "ye're just sac like him, an' ye speak sac like him,_l never ken ye wasna him." .
