BISHOP OF AOTEAROA
Question Of Appointment PA AUCKLAND, Dec 13 The responsibility for the appointment of a successor to the late Rt Rev. F. A. Bennett, first Bishop of Aotearoa, who died on September 17 rests with the four North Island bishops, said the Primate of New Zea land, Archbishop West-Watson in a telephone interview tonight Archbishop West-Watson ' said the matter was outside his jurisdiction The canons provided that the appointment of the Bishop of Aotearoa should be made by the Bishops of Auckland, Waikato, Waiapu and Wellington There was nothing to suggest who should convene the meeting to consider the appointment but it was logical that the senior bishop, in this instance the Bishop of Auckland, should be the likely convener. As there had been only one Bishop of Aotearoa, and he had been consecrated as long ago as 1928, there had been little opportunity to develop and set procedure for the election of a Maori bishop.
