TRAMWAYS DISPUTE
Sitting Of Tribunal Opened PA CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 13. -
The validity of the rule under which a bus operator employed by the Christchurch Tramway Board was dismissed was argued by counsel when the tribunal set up to consider the tramway dispute opened :»s sitting in Christchurch today. After hearing counsel’s submissions, the tribunal adjourned in the afternoon. It is expected that the tribunal’s decision on the validity of paragraph (A) of Rule 21 will be given tomorrow morning, after which the tribunal will consider whether the operator was rightfully dismissed. Mr C. C. Marsack, S.M., is chairman of the tribunal. The employer’s representatives are Messrs J. E. Jones, a former chairman of. the Christchurch Tramway Board and R. D. Dawson, the secretary of the New Zealand Tramways and Public Passengers transport Authorities’ Industrial Union of Employers. The union representatives are Messrs W„ B. Richards, the national president of the New Zealand Tramway Authorities Employees’ Industrial Union of Workers, and P. A. Hansen, the national secretary of the union. Dr A. L- Haslam, with him Mr W. K. L. Dougall, is appearing for the Tramway Board, and Mr P. C. P. McGavin for the employees.
