CONTAMINATED BREAD
Christchurch Company Fined PA CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 13. Wholemeal flour was peculiarly liable to contamination before it reached the bakery, and it seemed that screening was a precaution that might well be adopted in bakeries, said Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today when convicting Sunderland Bros., Ltd., bakers, who pleaded not guilty to a charge of selling bread unfit for human consumption. The firm was fined £5 and costs. Mr A. W. Brown, for the Medical Officer for Health, said that a large proportion of a cigarette end was found in a wholemeal loaf sold by the firm. The bakery was well conducted. The defence contended that it was not known how the cigarette end found its way into the loaf. There were strict instructions against employees smoking. , , The magistrate said the defence must prove that all reasonable steps were taken to ensure that the sale of the article did not constitute an offence.
In the Columba College prize list, published yesterday, Elizabeth Walsh was placed first in Form 111 and Alison Adam second. A reassessment of the class marks yesterday showed, however, that the two girls were equal for the year
