At last night’s meeting of the Otago Swimming Centre, reference was made to the death of Mr C. J. L. White, president of the Otago Council of Sport, and also an officer of the centre. Tributes were paid to Mr White’s services to the sport and a motion of sympathy was carried.

Miss A. L. Loudon, principal of Columba College, travelled to Oamaru yesterday and last night delivered the address at the prize-giving ceremony of the Waitaki Girls’ High School. Professor V. E. Galway will leave this morning to spend about fiye weeks in Australia.

Reference to the recent death of Mr Kenneth Scott, of Burnside, was made during the weekly Burnside sale yesterday by the chairmen of the Auctioneers’ and Master Butchers’ Associations. Mr Scott was a well-known figure about the Burnside saleyards for many years.

Representatives of the directors, members and staff of the National Building Society met at a function yesterday to pay tribute to Mr J. R. Fairbairn, who occupied the position of chairman of directors of the society from its inception in 1925. Mr Halliday (vicechairman), in making a presentation to Mr Fairbairn as a token of appreciation of his services, referred to the high esteem in which Mr Fairbairn was held by the other members of the board, all of whom had also held office continuously for 25 years. Other speakers were Messrs W. G. Kindley, A. C. Cameron, H. S. Bingham, W. Lang and G. S. Kirby.
