EFFORTS FOR MAORIS
Great Tolerance And Sympathy
PA WELLINGTON, Dec. 13. “As Maori Minister who succeeded the late Mr Fraser, I wish to pay a tribute to his understanding of and work for the Maori race, and express their profound sorrow in his passing, said Mr Corbett last night. “His deep human kindliness endeared him to the people, and his endeavours tp solve their problems were characterised by persistence and sincerity. “ Extreme tolerance and sympathy won him' a place perhaps higher in their esteem than any other Maori Minister. He appreciated their prob-~ lems and shortcomings, but at the same time was diligent in seeking methods by which their difficulties of adjustment to a new way of life could be cushioned and overcome. To fit himself for a better understanding of his administration, he made a study of Maori tradition, of culture and custom, and to the task of. social development he brought the gift of ripe wisdom and understanding.” »
