EIGHTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

FROM THE FILES OE THE ©taqo Bail)? {Times DUNEDIN, DECEMBER 13, 1865. The discovery in the North Island of a valuable building stone, of firstrate colour and quality is reported by the Auckland journals. The plac# where it has been found is on the coast, at no very great distance north of Auckland, -and so far as can be gathered from the many practical tests to which it has been put, it is likely to prove a discovery of very real and permanent value to that province, and, it may be also, to other parts of New Zealand. A deputation from the Tuapeka gold field waited on the Superintendent yesterday with a request for a subsidy towards prospecting the Wetherstones Flat. It was stated that £3OB had been subscribed on the spot, and the inhabitants of the district generally were desirous that the amount should be so far supplemented bv the Government as to allow of the Flat, which was known to be highly auaferous, being thoroughly tested. The total expense would probably not exceed £IOOO. His Honor promised" to bring the matter before the executive at an early date.
