STRING BAND SURPRISES
Successful In Chief Race At Beaumont
By the Sporting Editor
The concluding day of the Beaumont Racing Club’s meeting, which was held yesterday, was opened in overcast weather. Showers fell later in the afternoon and the last race was run in steady rain. There was a big surprise in the principal race of the day, the outsider on the win machine, String Band, winning decisively from Benevolus. Cogitation, the each way favourite, lost ground at the start. Don’t Listen, winner of the High-weight Handicap on the first day, made it a double for the meeting by winning the Champion Hack Handicap. She was started again in the 'last race and was headed by Kleve just short of the post. The first leg of the double, the Apprentices’ Handicap, was won by Silver Clipper, and the double of Silver Clipper and Don’t Listen paid £94 7s on the basis of £l. The racing was interesting throughout, and the totalisator returns for the two days showed an increase, in spite of the fact that the attendance yesterday was small.
